Sober living checklist for Middle Tennessee
Use these questions on a call or tour. Write down each home’s answers and ask for its rules and fees in writing so you can compare your options side by side.
Costs and payment
- What will I owe before move-in, and what is the total monthly cost? Ask for rent, deposits, program fees, and any charges for utilities, testing, or transportation.
- Which payments are refundable? What happens if I move out early or a bed is held and I cannot move in?
- Can I review the written fee schedule and payment agreement before paying?
Location and daily life
- Can I reliably get to work, appointments, meetings, and the people who support me? Check actual travel times and evening transportation.
- Who shares the bedroom and bathroom? Ask about accessibility, meals, laundry, and a place to secure belongings.
- Can I tour the home or arrange a video walkthrough before I commit?
Recovery support and house rules
- Who runs the home? Who is available during the day, overnight, and on weekends?
- What meetings, chores, curfews, and visitor rules are expected? Ask for the resident handbook and a sample week.
- What happens if a resident returns to substance use or breaks a rule? Ask how decisions are communicated and what help is available if someone has to leave.
Medication and care coordination
- What is the written policy on prescribed medications, including medications for opioid use disorder? Ask about storage, access, and how you get to prescriber or pharmacy appointments.
- How does the home coordinate with outside providers when a resident asks for help? Ask what information is shared and how consent is handled.
Certification, privacy, and concerns
- Is the residence currently certified? Ask which organization issued the certification and confirm the home’s status with that organization.
- What privacy protections apply to resident records, drug test results, and emergency contacts?
- How can a resident raise a concern or make a complaint? Ask for the process in writing and find out who reviews it.
Availability and move-in
- Is there a bed available now, and what must happen before I can move in? Ask about eligibility, paperwork, deadlines, and what to bring.
- Who should I call if the move-in date changes? Ask for the contact person’s name and number.
- Before paying or committing, write down the total move-in cost, monthly cost, move-in date, and any unanswered questions.
